This is a view of my 1969 Ford Mustang.  While trying to cover the dash inserts with the original contact paper my friend Stu Taylor recommended that we refinish it using real wood.  It sounded good to me and the results are breathtaking.  Nothing can compare to real wood!

The wood is cut into sections, respecting the grain patterns.  Then it is carefully glued onto the surface and allowed to dry.  Wood filler is used to fill imperfections and to help round corners.  You may choose from several Minwax stain colors.  All pieces receive two to three coats of stain simultaneously to ensure proper color match.  The polyurethane is then sprayed in thin coats to bring out a glossy finish.  Up to twenty coats may be applied with some light sanding in between coats.

When it comes to interiors, there is a lot of hype about wood graining services.  These places all claim to have real wood coverings, but very often it is all just computer-generated contact paper that is then "cleared over" to give it a nice appearance. 

Back in 2000 when I was restoring my Mustang, a long-time friend stopped by as I was stripping away the original covering on my dash inserts.  He looked at them for a minute and said, "Hey, let's cover these with real wood!"  As you can see, the end result is truly amazing.  Stop by with your parts/pieces or call in and I'll give you a quote to give your ride that real-wood appeal.
